All trappings of modern life notwithstanding, fortunate are the few who realise that no worldly attainment can fill the yawning void within. Search for meaning is the fulcrum of human restlessness. Does everything end with death? What is the purpose of life? Who is God? Who am I…? Blessed are they who get devoured by such questions. For, only then arises the possibility of beginning a quest that culminates in self-realisation. Scriptures like the Upanishads reveal the path that takes the seeker from the starting point of living with false identifications to the destination of knowing one’s real identity. Atmabodha is one such illuminating text written by one of the greatest original thinkers of all times, Sri Adi Shankaracharya. It is a beautiful piece of rhythmic literary work with emphasis on reasoning as the key methodology. Resorting to an assortment of easily relatable similes, the master succinctly presents the philosophy of Advaita Vedanta in 68 verses. But just as it is difficult to walk along a path in the obfuscation of darkness, so is the case with treading the path of spirituality without the guiding light of a living master. For, texts of Vedanta are recondite and trying to decipher the subtext on one’s own is not only ineffectual but also rather treacherous. A little knowledge is indeed dangerous for it can make you fall in bottomless pits of misconceptions and delusions. This book is a living master’s commentary explaining the nuanced intricacies of Atmabodha. Anandmurti Gurumaa elaborates and exemplifies in a very easy to understand language. This self-realised master guides with the light of her enlightenment, reinforcing concepts with empirical evidence. This book is a must read for those who want to be who they really are.
‘Sri Vichaar Chandrodaya’, a pithy, profound scripture written by enlightened sage Pandit Pitambar ji is a wonderful introduction to Vedanta and also a deep investigation into the mystery of the Ultimate. It is a fascinating, in-depth inquiry into fundamental existential questions: who am ‘I’, what is the ‘jeeva’ (individual soul), is the phenomenal world ‘real’, who is ‘Ishwar’, what is ‘pancha kosha’ and ‘panch tanmatra’, who is the ‘drashta’ (seer), what attributes should an aspirant cultivate, how do the sense organs function, etc. Using similes from day to day life, weaving impeccable logic with scientific precision, Pandit ji succinctly and systematically unravels these queries through a unique question-answer format. Originally in the quaint khadi- boli, revered master Anandmurti Gurumaa’s lucid exposition of this insightful scripture in two intensive retreats unveils the essence of Vedanta, as one after another, each of its sixteen chapters opens a window affording yet another glimpse of the lofty pinnacle of human existence.
Nature’s unique riddle, puzzle, paradox - woman. At times vulnerable, yet the epitome of strength and resilience, embodiment of compassion. Giver of life, daughter, wife, mother, professional, home-maker and more – through multiple roles she nurtures and sustains. Every woman is Shakti - The Divine Mother, yet even today, women face abuse, humiliation, discrimination and rejection. Gender bias and social conditioning in a male-dominated society have made her weak, submissive and insecure. Shockingly, even in a so-called ‘civilised’ world, the girl-child is brutally killed in the womb itself, denied her basic right to live, grow and blossom. The book ‘Shakti’ by revered master Aandmurti Gurumaa is a clarion call for society to change this warped mind-set, clears misconceptions and empowers women with dignity and self- respect. It is a tribute to every woman, a reminder to recognize her capabilities and to blaze forth and shine in her immeasurable divine power.
The book ‘Shivoham’ by revered master Anandmurti Gurumaa unravels the essence of Adi Shankaracharya’s immortal composition ‘Nirvanashatakam.’ It is a compilation of discourses conducted by Gurumaa during a 10 day meditation retreat in Rishikesh in 2002. Lucidly and eloquently, the revered master decodes the profound significance hidden in these cryptic verses, which capture the quintessence of Vedanta. Through this book, Gurumaa takes us on the inspiring adventure to know our true self, an insightful journey that transcends duality and invokes the wisdom that frees us from ignorance and suffering. It brings alive the fragrance of these timeless verses, evoking a sense of grandeur and glory as to the true nature of our being, which is pristine, eternal, unchangeable and imperishable.
‘Bhaj Govindam’ by revered master Anandmurti Gurumaa elucidates the beautifully poetic yet powerful verses composed by Adi Shankaracharya centuries ago, which capture the essence of Vedanta. Seeing a Brahmin with furrowed brow, trying to learn Sanskrit grammar by heart, Shankaracharya’s spontaneous and compassionate admonishment to him was “Bhaj Govindam!” To wake up to the fact that life is short and chanting the Lord’s name alone can ferry one across the turbulent ocean of samsara. For it is this which is the refuge, the shore, the haven against storms of desire, passions, and fear of death. Thus did these timeless verses come forth from the pious, learned and erudite Shankaracharya, verses which are relevant even today to shatter the ignorance of eons and liberate us from the bondage of our attachments and desires. These 31 verses had been lucidly explained by Gurumaa during a retreat and are now compiled here in book form. Only an enlightened one can lead others out of ignorance and Anandmurti Gurumaa is such, an epitome of wisdom and compassion. Through these profound verses, Gurumaa unveils as to what makes an aspirant eligible for the highest wisdom, what characteristics a disciple should embody, who can be called a true renunciate and more. Let this profound text touch your heart, illumine your intellect and make you an ardent lover of the Divine!
