What is Meditation?
Q : I am a beginner in the field of meditation. Whenever I sit for meditation, my mind never relaxes itself from thinking. Even while sitting quiet it keeps on thinking. It happens to be quieter in an introspection of what has happened? Where do I go wrong? But if meditation means doing nothing, not even thinking, then what should I do?
A : Thinking is not meditation and if you believe that thinking is meditation or you have given a new name to it, “Introspection” definitely introspection is not meditation. One has to be in a very wakeful mind state, very conscious but mind has to be in absolute silence. Moving towards this state can be called meditation.
In the beginning there can be various thoughts but one has to know the way to calm down the mind. Just by closing your eyes and sitting idle doesn’t mean that you are meditating. So many individuals have overly misused the word meditation. These days every one talks about meditation without even knowing, what it means or what is the right or the wrong way or what state is meditation and what state is not meditation? So, it is a very vague approach.
Shelly, I suggest you to listen to more discourses. One of my books named “Know Your Mind” will help you to understand the mind. You need to be in right place and with the right person to learn to meditate
