The Psychology of Fear

Q: Pranam Gurudev, I have  a great feeling of fear inside me. I can feel this whenever I confront a situation. My heart starts to beat faster than usual. At my mind level I know that I shouldn’t be afraid of this situation, but I am. I don’t know Guruji whether it’s genetic or not., but I want to overcome this feeling of fear.

A: Well, fear is never genetic, fear doesn’t come to us from our parents. Moreso, we can only say that some times it is the conditioning and the upbringing given to us by our parents which may inculcate certain fears in us. But mostly the fears which are present in your mind are because of you, because of not being able to understand how your mind functions.

Also by having too many desires, by keeping yourself always conscious of your ego & image, by being persistently in a pursuit to please others and some times wishing for those things which are not possible, because you had never those means, capacities & abilities & sometimes you never had that kind of patience to face defeat.

So, one is fearful of the fact whether success would come to me or not, but the truth is that you have not learnt how to accept defeat or you have not learnt how to be conscious enough, how to be smart enough and how to be intelligent enough to tackle the situation. This all happens when you are not firm in yourself, when you are not sure of yourself, when you lack confidence and when you do not see yourself as up to the mark and when you grad yourself as incompetent. So why would others not mark you as incompetent.

Thus, you need to rise in your own eyes first, you need to face situations as they are and you have to stop calculating about what would be the consequences or results of your actions. Sometimes life just requires action, sometimes life is just a gamble and you have to play your card and if you are fearful of losing and you end up not playing your card, you are still going to lose. Life is an adventure and life should be dealt like an adventure and if you look at it this way, then things would be pretty different.

I would suggest that you do Yoga Nidra and Urja everyday. Once you learn to do Urja in a correct way you would learn to go wild, wild in the sense you can let go off all your repressed emotions, you can let go off your inferiorities, you can let go off your sadness & depression and you can let go off being judgemental of yourself. These two things would really help you. So do Urja & do Yoga Nidra, that would definitely help.
