Shivratri: The Day of introspection of one’s spiritual journey

Q : One of the attributes of Shiva is ajanma, one who is never born. How can any Jayanti or celebration of birthday or incarnation be for him that too on one particular day? Further, is it not futile to celebrate one particular day as Jayanti unless one can celebrate life?

A : If I am not wrong Rajender Deo, aren’t you the same person who has read Osho and J.K.? If you are, then my answer to you is, number one, Shiva is ajanma, true! Who is never born, true! Then you say how a Jayanti can be celebrated, may be you are trying to point towards Shivratri. We corroborated with Shiva. The understanding of the people about Shiva or Shankar is so shallow and so childish that they don’t have any clue, what they do, why they do? The whole society celebrates Shivratri as the day when Shiva got married to Parvati. This is folklore, this is mythology. The myth about Shiva getting married to Parvati is actually a symbolism. It has a very deep meaning. And how come this day has been selected to celebrate his Jayanti. It is not for Shiva, it is not for any unseen God. We can say that Shiva is the first master, the first yogi from whom whole yoga philosophy comes out. The dialogue between Parvati and Shiva is in a way, first text of Yoga and Tantra.

I don’t wish to elaborate much more than this but in a nutshell Shiva is the higher consciousness. The Shakti, the energy that is lying dormant in human body is called as Kundalini and the meeting of the Kundalini, the Shakti with Shiva happens in Sahastrar, one of the seventh psychic centre which is considered to be anatomically in head and Shakti’s point is considered to be, in males it is perineum and in the women it is almost close to cervixes. There are methods with which this energy is awakened and then through the Sushumna, the central psychic channel, it is pushed upwards and when it meets after breaking the three knots, three Granthi, the Brahma Granthi, the Shiva Granthi . Then finally the energy reaches the Sahastrar, the point where it’s said that it gets married with Shiva. When we say married, it means the union. Union of energy with higher consciousness is Shivratri. So it is not a day on which we are going to celebrate anything about the ajanma, or the immortal, impersonal abstract Shiva but this is the day which is selected by the Guru and further disciples for long, long time, to draw a map of what we have done up till now and what the path is. What is still to be done?

So it has in a way nothing to do with ajanma Shiva but it has everything to with your Sadhna-spiritual practice.
