Choosing right career: Never ending conflict between parents & children
Q: Revered Gurumaa, I am in B. Tech (I.T.) 4th year now. I have been a good student (90% in 10th & 89% in 12th). But I was forced to take admission in B. Tech against my will by my mother. My mind is not at all technical. Now I feel frustrated and accuse my mother. This causes tension though I love her a lot. What should I do to train my mind that whatever happens is for good only?
A: Well, you have given good 4 years of your life to B. Tech and now after 4 years, how come you are waking up to the fact that you have a problem and you shouldn’t have opted for B. Tech. I think for now, it is better that you apply all your mind on finishing your B. Tech & later on once you have got your degree, you can pursue other things also.
But one thing is for sure that if you are getting impressed upon by others to make your decisions & later on if you are angry about those decisions, then in your heart you might feel that it is valid and ok. But the truth is that one should be very vigilant about taking any decision, especially about their education.
Although parents always think about the welfare of their child, but sometimes the parents too should listen to what the child has to say about the choices or the likings or the dislikings. So don’t waste your time now on grumbling about it. It would have been better if you had asked me this question 4 years ago. Then maybe I could have given you a different advice, but for now - enjoy being an engineer.
And regarding having no bent for technicalities, I believe the whole life is a technicality, even the answer which you are listening now is through the boon of some technical person. Bent or no bent, it is just matter of conditioning of your mind, your mind must have conditioned itself to believe that you have no technical bent & maybe if you can, without being biased, look into this part, maybe you will begin to like what you are learning for now.
