How can we deal with the negative thoughts that emotions that often consume us?
It is not possible to do anything about emotions like anger, jealousy and desires once they become powerful enough to consume us. The only way to prevent ourselves from getting carried away by such thoughts is by being more and more aware. Awareness is a fire which can destroy unwholesome thoughts before they become strong enough to burn us.
The mind is very subtle and difficult to catch. But the body is gross and easier to make still. The whole magic lies in being more and more watchful towards every movement, every part of the body such that no action happens without our awareness. It is easy to watch a single part of the body like the eyelids blinking or the breath going in and out, but more difficult to watch the body as a whole. As we sharpen our watchfulness and awareness, it becomes easier to watch the body as a whole, and gradually it will become possible to watch the mind and the number of thoughts that come in and out.
