Shivoham

Wednesday, November 5th, 2008

One loud and strong call from our mother is good enough to wake us up in the morning from our long night’s sleep, isn’t it? The album Shivoham is a mother’s wake up call.. Our mother’s do not call out our names for entertainment, they call us to bring us out of our laziness. Similarly is the album Shivoham. Its not just music for entertainment, its a mother’s wake up call… Are you ready to awaken, yet?
If yes, listening to the songs of this album in a true contemplative spirit will do the trick!
This call comes from great masters like “Kabir and Adi Shankaracharya”, sung to us beautifully by Gurumaji. Every song reflects the same idea; that you are not the body which dies, awaken to the truth, know your true self and be free!
‘Duniya do din ka hai mela’ is a mesmerizing song of Kabir which reminds us that this world is nothing but a ‘fun fair’. Everybody reaps as he sows here be he Guru or disciple. Nobody and nothing belongs to us here, for one day we wrap up our game and leave with death. The one who realizes this is a special and lucky one!
‘Humka Udhave Chadariya’ speaks of life, which ends with a procession on four shoulders and covered with the white cloth (death!). But the master benevolently gives us bitter truth in a sugar coated pill!
“Mano Buddhya Ahankara Chittani Naham… Chidananda Roopa Shivoham Shivoham”
Most of us have heard this verse from Adi Shankaracharya’s great composition ‘Atmashatak’. But rarely do we understand its true essence. All songs in this album create the background for us to drown into the essence of these shlokas. Every shloka tells us what we are not, and also tells us what we are… We are not the bodies we wear, we are not the sense organs, ego, anger, love, hatred. Our true self has no relatives, friends, not even parents. In reality we never die for we were never born! Our true self is – Truth, Infinte, all pervading consciousness.
Gurumaaji sings these shlokas in Sanskrit for a seeker to contemplate and meditate upon and also in Hindi in ‘Mera Sat Chit Anand Roop, Koi Koi Jaane’ A disciple who has understood the worth of his Master sways to this song in utter gratitude joy and thankfulness. ‘Tere Jaisa Kaun Hai’ is song of praise for the Sadguru who is none other than ‘Sat Chit Anand’ in a human form. Who can parallel such a benevolent being who has not only experienced ultimate bliss and joy, but also wakes up all sleeping souls to the same truth?
Are we prepared to awaken yet?

Nishabd prarthna

Wednesday, November 5th, 2008

A prayer with a difference, Nishabd Prarthna is a jubiliant celebration for a person in love with the Master or the Lord! It is a prayer which requires no knowledge of scriptures, no knowledge of religion either. In fact this is a prayer beyond all ideas of religion, a prayer of love, a direct heart to heart connection with the divine. The music of this album is contemporary, as against traditional hymns one normally sways to in prayer. Nevertheless this song not only allows you to sing an innocent prayer of love, it indeed encourages you to break out into a ball dance with your Lord. How else would you imagine spending time with the one you love? Isn’t prayer a way to spend time with the greatest and sweetest lover of all, God. Packed with a song of silence from Gurumaaji as well as a sing along karaoke, ‘Nishabd Prarthna’ is all you need to unleash your creativity in prayer and sweep the unconquerable Lord off ‘his’ or ‘her’ feet!

‘Gyan Prakasi Guru Mila, So Jan Bisar Na Jaaye,
Jab Saheb Kripa Kari, Tab Guru Mileya Aaye’

“When one is blessed by the company of a wise enlightened Guru, one should never forget that this is the ultimate grace of God!”
This is just one of the many verses of Kabir, the great Indian mystic who spoke the bitter, hard hitting truth and never concealed divine knowledge under metaphors. This album is indeed a rare and special gift to all seekers; rare because it includes poems of Kabir we normally do not come across and special because Gurumaaji does complete justice to these enlightening verses by explaining them in a simple and lucid manner for all listeners.
The album has two tracks with Kabir’s poems set to pleasantly hummable tunes by Gurumaaji. ‘Guru Archana’ is an offering to the Guru, where Kabir describes his quest for truth and how his Guru led him towards it. Every verse is a gem in its own right, describing the role of a Master is leading a disciple towards truth and enlightment.
One can not only enjoy a divine concoction of wisdom and melody in Baadal Barsa Prem Ka’, but can also assimilate these truths within one’s own heart by through Gurumaaji’s exposition of the verses in ‘Ek Mulakat Kabir Se’.
Backed with simple and catchy tunes, Kahe Kabira drives home the message to all listeners with a powerful punch!

Des Begana Hai

Wednesday, November 5th, 2008

Des Begana Hai hits the nail on the head. It is hard to find an album which lays out truth so explicitly as this one. For all of us who think this world is our home, this album is an eye opener. Every song drives home one message. This world of desires and attachments, which we call our home, is only a temporary accomodation. Our real home is elsewhere. Gurumaaji leads us to this very home with a heart piercing rendition of Kabir’s poems in ‘Des Begana Hai’.
‘Are Atma Re Tujhe Kiska Dar Hai’ wakes up an individual to his true heritage. Gurumaaji sings, why do you fear death when you are in reality one with the infinite omnipresent truth.
We see everyday people are born and die in this world, nobody stays here forever. Joy is followed by sorrow and vice versa and we do not eat a morsel more than what’s in store for us. Yet we do not realise this world is transitionary, a temporary halt on a long journey. ‘Jogiya Jag Hai ek Saraay‘ opens our eyes to this very truth.
In ‘Mehram Hoye To Jaane Sadhu‘ Kabir describes the true home which seekers ought to head towards. The beauty of this home is beyond description of the Vedas and Puranas and all barriers of caste and creed.
The title song ‘Rehna Nahi Des Begana Hai, warns us not to get involved in this transitionary world, but move towards the truth under the guidance of an enlightened Master.
Finally ‘Sadhu Yeh Murdon ka Gaon‘ is like setting the bitter truth to tunes! everything in this world is destined to have an end, including the sun and the moon, masters and disciples, diseased and healthy, kings and subjects. Kabir awakens us to the one truth which is everlasting and infinite amidst this village of dead and urges us to attain to it.

Baawari Jogan

Wednesday, November 5th, 2008

A Taste of Divine Inebriation!
True to its name! Bawari Jogan depicts a divine inebriated lover steeped in love for her beloved. The Beloved being none less than the Almighty Himself! Every track in the album bears witness to this intoxication; each verse is an expression of pure love, subtly bringing out deeper meanings of life.
“Diya Jale Agam Ka” with its uncanny capturing tune is all about the infinite flame of the truth which requires no fuel to burn. It is self illuminating and all pervading.

“Jaoon Main Jahan Tum Hi Ho Wahan” reflects the quest of a seeker who looks for her beloved high and low and finally comes to realize that the all pervading “Ram” lives right within her and she need not pine anymore.

“Prem Pyala Guru Diya” is an exceptionally mesmerizing song which portrays the divine love given to a disciple by a Master. It’s much more intoxicating than any liquor and leaves the seeker lost in a blissful world of love.

“Jab Khudi Ko Chodega” is the word of a Master which says that the moment one drops his ego, he attains to the Beloved, nay, he himself is transformed into the Beloved that he is searching for.

And last but not the least is “Sukh Aate Hai , Dukh Aate Hai” which teaches every human the practical way of living life amidst changing scenes of joy and sorrow, life and death, praise and censure, a powerful message packed into one extremely hummable song!

Aanando

Wednesday, November 5th, 2008

One who visits a beautiful city tries her best to describe it to others who haven’t seen it yet. In Aanando, Gurumaaji through her insightful poems paints a picture of this divine bliss or ‘Anand’ for all those who wish to experience it. Listening to the deep meaningful lyrics of this album in a meditative mood can instantly drag one deep down within oneself. The album has a tone of melancholy joy, a feeling which a true seeker can very well identify with.
In ‘Mujhe Meri Masti Kahan Leke Aayi’, Gurumaaji describes her experience of bliss where she sees the entire world as a reflection of her own true self and find there is nothing but bliss all around.
‘Le Chal Pawan Uda’ is like a soft breeze which carries a lover into the land of the beloved. A land which is free from all joys and sorrows and replete with divine ‘Ananda’.
‘Babiha Amrit Vele Boleya’ is a beautiful hymn of Guru Nanak set to tune in Gurumaaji’s melodious voice. It is said that the ‘Amrit Vela’ or the early hours before dawn are the most auspicious moments for a seeker to connect with the Divine. Guru Nanakji says that just as the ‘Babiha bird’ sings beautifully in the early hours of dawn, so should a devotee sing the Holy Name of the Lord with all their love!
While describing this Divine Bliss in many different ways, the Master exhorts seekers in the song ‘Apne Aap Ka Kar Le Vichar’, to take a step ahead, contemplate about their own true self and experience this ‘Ananda’ for themselves.
