Does yoga and gymming have the same benefits?
Q : Pranam Guruji. No doubt, yoga provides great benefits to our body and mind, but can proper exercising at the gym be of same spiritual benefits for us. What should I choose?
Rajat Kaura
Answer
Rajat, working out in the gym is going to work at the muscular level alone & partly to help out your bigger bones. It helps you to buckle up but it won’t help you at the endocrinal level. Gymming will not help you at the level of your nervous system. Neurologically, you aren’t gaining anything other than the heavy rush of the adrenalin getting released in your blood stream. It gives you the happy high feeling which most of the gymmers and most of the aerobic practitioners have, the feeling of being high, in a great energy pool.
But what happens is that it also exaggerates your catabolism, which means that after a time it becomes more taxing on the joints and bones; also, gymming does not allow the ways & means to energise your spinal cord and spinal column. And our spinal cord is the basic foundation of our health & it is only through yoga practice that you attain this level of energy and flexibility in your spine.
So I believe that if you really wish to gain at the muscular level and also increase energy and flexibility while doing yoga, then maybe Rajat, you should come to the ashram. The sessions which are practiced everyday over here in the ashram, they are a special set of yogic exercises which will strengthen your muscles and which will help you to gain all the goodness of gymming without the negativities or the side effects of heavy gymming.
