What is Creativity?

Q : For long creativity has been associated with art and literature what according to you is “creativity”? Is it just limited to certain fields or is an open agenda?

Answer

When we think from limited minds, things look in a very small bracket, and mind as such which you have, the conscious mind, is not bigger than a bubble. The scientists have proved that the capacity of human brain is immense but we are just using only 3% of our brain, this means even Einstein was using just close to 6% of his capacity. The nature has given us abundance of intuitions, wisdom, and our brain has been constructed in such a way that so called supernatural feats should have been a normal feat, right from clairvoyance to premonition to levitation, astro travelling, dance, music, every sphere of the life, and every color of the life, gains a beautiful luster and the grandeur only in those brains which are functioning to their optimum levels.

With the limitations of the mind, we tend to believe that ‘creativity’ means art or literature, dance or music. But the truth is this you cannot define the life, the flux of the life, which is happening around us in this whole cosmos. Right from the smallest pack of dust to the largest voluminous size plane in a cosmos, from speck of a dust to that huge voluminous planet, each and every area is part of the creativity because when we say ‘creativity’, then whatever you are seeing, whatever you are hearing, whatever you are smelling, whatever you can think about and whatever you can not think about, whatever is there in the milkyways or whatever is there within your body, whatever is there in your mind, and whatever is there beyond the mind, comes in the region of creativity, so we cannot use a marker and boldly say that this is a part of the creativity, and rest is not.

Remember nothing is mundane in this universe. Even a grass, a glade of grass, is an immaculately designed, shaped, has been given a color, has been given an identity, has been given a consciousness, but which is in a sleep mode. A smallest of the creature, an ant, just see its body, look at the and with a magnified glass, the curves which an ant is holding, the shape of eyes and legs, you might not look at a cockroach with this vision, but I would say just have a look, without bringing our bias or fear in-between, just have a look at a cockroach or a rat or a cat or a camel or a horse or majestically standing dolphins, penguins, whales, sharks, stars, moon.

Do you think so that these are ordinary things? They are best of their creations, and they have their own distinctive, unique quality and they have a unique shape and they have a unique color. Now look towards all the human beings, all of you who are sitting here, your faces, your body form, the way your body has been made. Someone is very athletic, someone is more towards the skeletal, someone is more bulky; now go towards your senses, your eyes, your nose, each & every part of your body. Move within your mind, the ability to see. Can this be compared with something lesser than an art? Can you call it not an art, the way your eye is working, the way your ears are working, the way your body is working? The way the dance of the blood is happening in your body, the circulation; it’s more of a “dance”. It’s going against the gravity. It’s rushing all towards the head and it’s coming back down. The way the micro organisms in your gut are working and functioning and re-producing themselves and each and every amoeba, each and every micro organism has its beauty, has a shape, has a depth. So we cannot limit creativity to art or literature to music or to dance. Creativity is much bigger and we need to broaden up our vision to really understand.

In Mythology, we say that the creator has created this creation, the world, which we are seeing, but if you go more into the depth, then there is no creator but creativity is happening. It’s a constant process, the nature is working constantly & persistently. And every day there are billions of body cells are dying & new ones are coming up and same thing is happening in air, in water, in earth; same thing is occurring everywhere.

So there is continuous process of creativity. Have you ever seen the web made by a spider? What an art form! What an architecture! He produces the raw material from his body; he spins it up intricately and makes those beautiful thin circles. That they don’t carry a scale and yet the proportions are so correct! No architect can produce the raw material from within. They have to buy, they have to produce, but here the spider is bringing out and this web, mind you, is not for some exhibition, this web is way of the spider to catch hold his pray so that he can eat.

Creativity is a continuous process and right from body to mind to your spirit, from this seen world and from that entire world which is unseen and beyond your eyes, everything comes in the region of creativity. But when you will think from your mundane, small mini mind, then there is a big limitation and it’s an irony of human beings that most of the humans are not even aware of this definition that creativity means art, music and dance. For them there are just three things-eat, drink and when you eat & drink, your body is ready for sex, third is make money. So money, sex and food; these are the only three things which are being sought; which human heart finds for, and is always bothered for and continuously is planning to have more and more and more and more and more. And end up in this ruckus. There is a very small minority of the human beings who really, really are involved with the music, with dance, so for such normal people, even music and dance seems something of great ecstasies. Say if a classical singer is giving her rendition, a Prosing singer, a Soprano, how many would be enjoying her singing! There is a big bulk of people who just make fun of it or just run away, the level of the music, which is understandable by majority is very crass, is of very crude quality.

But as such creativity is a non-ending process and you cannot put it in a bracket that these things alone fit into the label of creativity and rest does not. Just have a look at your hands, how intricately and beautifully aligned and designed and the functionality of your hands. Just have a look around the trees, the plant, the roses, the butterflies, the chirping of the birds, is there anything which you can call is not happening because of creativity! Creativity is something which is an ‘integral part’ of us. The only thing is that we have to open-up our eyes to see, admire and enjoy the creativity.
