How to differentiate a true Guru from scandalous ones?

Q : My faith in Gurus is decreasing day by day because of the scandals taking place nowadays. गुरुमा मेरे मन मे द्वेष भरा जा रहा है… Please help me.

Answer Shweta, I cannot help you. It is your mind, you have to take care of it and you have to see whether you want to fill it with love, hatred or anger or whatsoever. And as per your saying, I am seeing that gurus are falling day by day and with all the scandals, do you think so that the one who is committing crime for money or for things can be called a morally good person? It is just a foolish bunch of people who have adorned them with this title of ‘Guru’ & people like you Shweta, who are foolish enough to consider any person, any ‘chaalaak’ person who knows how to market himself or herself well, as a guru; well, that was your mistake. If you have bought fake jewellery, you cannot fight with the shopkeeper for selling it. You bought it at a cheap price. You never get a diamond for a cheap price, you always get a cheap jewellery piece. Similarly, the groups of people whom you are seeing around; if they are cheap and if people have adorned them with the title of ‘guru’, then they have just made the Guru word cheap. As you too are doing the same thing and I would not like to comment more upon it other then this. Please get the recording of Guru Gita, listen to it and then you will come to know how easily you have been fooled because you do not know who the Guru is, you do not know to whom you should call a Guru, whom you should not call a Guru. Every Tom, Dick & Harry who dresses like a guru and who is doing ‘Hare Ram, Hare Ram’ for some hours and doing other nasty things in other hours in privacy cannot be called a guru. And if you are calling that person a guru, that just shows how big a fool you were and no doubt there are some people who are making good money because of all these scandals happening. For example, the media - they are doing a great job by exposing this. But is it not so that even people like Kabir were blamed for adultery and people like Raidas too were blemished by certain people. But they were true in their girth. Hence, all these rumours came and went away and nothing harmed them. But the problem is that you can spit on the moon, you can do so; that is a different story that spit falls on your face. But yet I will still say, before considering anyone a guru, do not consider that person a guru just because the media is calling him a guru or just because thousands of people who sit with that person call him a guru.
