Answer Well, there isn't any set designed to define life. So, there can't be any set definition for the purpose of life. Life, I think is purposeless. Why is the Sun coming up everyday? Ask the Sun, what is purpose ? If Sun could answer, he would say that I am just revolving, I am just moving along with the Earth. I don't know when you see me rising and setting. I am always there, I am just revolving. I am just playing the game of going round and round and round as long as nature wants me to go about. I am not rising for anyone and I am not setting for anyone.
But people living on Earth say that the Sun has risen, the sun has set. The Sun rises but what is the purpose? Nothing. What is the purpose of Earth? Trees and plants are growing on Earth; seas and rivers are being taken care by the ground. For what purpose? Nothing. And what is the purpose of you human beings? Nothing. And actually the one who had understood this can now give any purpose. You can make it out. You may want to become great sportsman, great artist, great photographer, great lawyer, great doctor, dancer, musician, or may want to spread happiness, to serve people, to study various subjects or even to get enlightened.
What ever purpose you wish to give, life will accept it and then you can mould it up to pursue your goal, to reach out to the purpose of your choice. But life as such is purposeless. My statement might shock you a lot because you assume that I would say that the purpose of life is to get enlightened. But sorry I don't fit in your definition of Gurus; I am not one of those. I am not part of that whole clown group. So don't expect the answers which will endorse your thinking about Guru’s reply.
