How creativity and intelligence are linked with each other?
Q : How creativity and intelligence are linked with each other? Does one need to be intelligent to be creative?
Answer Intelligence is just one faculty and creativity is far another one. They have no relationship at all. When we say ‘intelligence’, are we talking about the thinking ability, the cognitive ability, retention of the knowledge? When we are saying the intelligence, are we saying about being strix smart, when we say intelligence, are we talking about, making computer hardware, making satellites, running business, making billions of money because even these things cannot be done by a fool.
So all these successful scientists, businessmen, artists, actors, astronomers were definitely not a fool, they were intelligent and they are intelligent. Thus they have succeeded in their respective fields. But if that is criteria of being intelligent, then Buddha was not an intelligent person. He never know how to use a mobile phone and even today I know a number of yogis who don’t know a.b.c. of any so called hi-tech machinery. Really need to understand what do you mean by “intelligence”? Einstein was intelligent or not! Edison was intelligent or not! Eddington was intelligent or not! Newton was intelligent or not! The answer is ‘yes’ or ‘no’. ‘Yes’, because in their respective fields, they did a lot of deep work, gave great inventions to the world. But Einstein was such a forgetful person, he would not even remember how many babies he had made with all those women, who came in his life. And there were these people who had given such a great scientific research work and great inventions, the nuclear technology, the electricity, the telephones, they knew so much about the matter, about the atoms. But they were absolutely ignorant about their own real-self. They had no mastery on their mind. They had no mastery on their own consciousness. They had no control upon the functioning of the mind. They had never experience the state where the mind goes into total stillness, in great equipoise. And they never transcended their mind. And one of their brother and head said this that even Einstein was using just a 6 % of his brain.
When we say ‘intelligence’, we’ll have to see, we are talking about in relation of what, that’s very important. Secondly, creativity is very different thing from intelligence. You can be a high IQ person but a very clumsy one, when it comes to creativity; you can be a great literary person. In India the perfect mark or a perfect sign of a poet is who has an uncut beard, muffles, un-ironed clothes, hair which is dishevelled, lost in himself, but when he or she writes, they write beautifully. So these different-different spheres of the life have their own distinctive qualities. So you can be intelligent but not creative. But you cannot be a fool and yet creative. But a creative person cannot be called an intelligent, because if we are going to say that being intelligent means that you are educated or you have done some invention or you have done some research work or your have done a PhD or you have done M-Phil. Then may be we can call Picasso an unintelligent person, Tagore an unintelligent person. They were creative in their own respective fields.
What I believe and understand that 'creativity' and 'true intelligence' go hand in hand. But the intelligence which is being accepted by people as intelligence will not go hand in hand with the creativity. So every poet cannot be a dancer and every dancer cannot be good cook and every good cook cannot be a writer, and every writer can’t be good hundred of other ways. But when we say about the complete person, a person who is living with higher level of consciousness will be intelligent and will be creative also. And this is the perfect harmony of intelligence and creativity, which can occur to an individual but that individual who has lost his individuality and has merged with the infinity. Now when you are one with the infinity, your source of intelligence and your source of creativity is something which will never wither away, it’ll be always there. So it’s an “everyday evolution” happening and this evolution happens to those who are experiencing the involution. So in and out perfect.
