Can one go in for organ donation?

Q : Can one go in for "देह दान" (Deh Daan) - giving the body to the medical center and can "नेत्र दान" (Netra Daan)-donation of eyes be done? I wish to make both of these donations.

Answer Saraswati, definitely you can pledge your body for the noble cause. I believe that once the Prana has left the body, it is just a shell, which is going to decay. It is better to donate the body to some place where more can be learnt about human body. Definitely the eyes, the liver, the lungs all these human organs can be donated. There are many people who are waiting to have a set of cornea or a liver or a lung or a pancreas, a heart etc to lead a normal life. Within two hours of death of a person, the organs can be removed and they can be stored for some time or they can be transplanted into the person in need directly. So in a way you will continue to live through that person's body but more than that, organ donation is something, which will create something fruitful out of that dead corpse which is of no use to anyone at all.
