Are people aware of their own creativity?
Q : Do people have creativity in themselves which they are not aware of?
Answer
The basic thing is we are born with great capacities, every human being is born with great capacity and these capacities are to think, to create, the capacity to admire beauty, the capacity to write beautifully poetry, pottery, painting, dancing, cooking, mothering, fathering, now all these are not just mundane things, but there are billions of parents, who have accidentally become a parent, but they are not a parent in a true sense.
There are scores of people who are painters but they don’t know that they have this capacity or ability in them. As I’ve said society at large is more bothered and is concerned for pleasing the senses. Bigger chunk of humanity is more bothered about attaining materialistic success. To get recognition, to get fame, to get name, to have a bigger house and more bigger house and then there are those people who want house in every country, I’ve a house in America, then I should have in England and now there should be one house in Costa Rica and the other one in Australia and now another one in Switzerland So there is an non-ending list of this materials which they are longing of and they are dreaming for and they are wondering and praying and kneeling towards God and asking when, when will we be the lucky ones to have all these things which they want. Now actually it’s not what they want, it is what they are seeing that people have it and now they too want to have what others have.
In a way physically people grow, but at the level of mind, they never grow, they are still child. Have you seen to children fighting because one has a toy, and now the another child is going to have a truth & nail fight, to have that toy, I need this toy, I want this toy. The aptitude has not changed; the aptitude of adults is still about possessing and they don’t have that kind of time also, to enjoy their possessions but still their ego has to be buttered and they have to have this satisfaction “oh I have it”, “I have it”. They have best of the jewellery but they can’t wear it every day because if they do, they will be looking like someone who is too eager to show his this vulgar side. So people wait for a party or some formal occasion to bring up their fineries and jewelleries out but in a normal day, they are wearing their capry or a torn jeans and a loose t-shirt but yes they still want to buy new pair of shoes. When they go out to buy one single shoe, they end up in buying ten and if they go to buy ten, they’ll end up buying fifty shoes and their shoes are lined up in their homes.
Now the creativity is being last in these mundane activities, I say even to all- A house, which is beautifully designed too is an expression of creativity. So keep your house spectacularly clean and shining, even this is a part of creativity. And all these women who spend hours in the beauty parlors, polishing up their bodies, getting the manicures and pedicures done, even this is a one expression of creativity. They are beautifine, but their whole beauty is precisely concerned with the body alone. Worrying about the clothes, want to buy expensive designer clothes, wish to buy those contour linings, wish to buy all those designer shoes and bags and hoping to buy and then hoping to show it to others that I have it. I would say even this is a one kind of creativity. But that is too much limited to their matter, to their body.
We can say that the creativity is there in every person, you must have seen. In my travels, I’ve seen poor women who are daily laborers, they’ve very small wages, but yet, in the evening time, she might not have a bath but still she’ll comb her hair, she might not have expensive cosmetics, but still she’ll apply, may be just the mustard oil on her face, to receive her husband and even if it is not happening for her husband, she wants to feel good, she wants to feel beautiful. Beauty is an expression of creativity. Move into the tribal areas where there is no reach of any cosmetic industries and neither they have that kind of money, but yet all these women have innovative ways to beautify their bodies. They might use the chalk or use some dye, made by crushing some plant leaves, and she’ll make a paste and she will apply on her body.
I was just now in one of the area in India, that’s called “Jharkhand”, Jharkhand and in that also I went to a very remote and small place called “Rikhia”. No electricity, so whole day you have just your own hand held fan to fan yourself and the lady who was working there, this woman was wearing a saree not very good one, but natural it’s a very poor region, but she had a beautiful tattoo on her arm, it was a peacock, right from her upper arm all the way to her wrist, her whole arm was done in such a way and such subtle designing, what right stroke, this is creativity. The one who did it is an artist but I would say the one, one who got it done, the patience to get it done, right. The time which she spent in getting that whole arm decorated.
You see their houses, these are mud-houses but still they use one or another way, where she’ll just put the leaves of the mango tree, tie it up with thread and hung it up in front of her house. Even this is creativity. When a woman is cooking in the kitchen, I say this is creativity, from raw material she prepares such delicious food, yes she might not know how to garnish it; she doesn’t has a candle light stand, she doesn’t has a small vas where she can put a stem of rose but still when she’ll cook and when she’ll serve even that is one expression of creativity. But right from the tribal woman, to that upscale Newyork cosmopolitan educated woman who has loads of money to spend and who spend most of the time walking in the 50 Second Avenue and buying those expensive things, both are these women have their own versions of creativity, but both of them are concerned with their body alone, not beyond that.
Cooking is an art, it’s an expression of creativity; keeping your books neatly on the book-shelf is creativity. Now some have it, some don’t. Now someone might not like, most of the men,’ most of the men’, I am saying, it’s not general rule but most of the men won’t be bothered about how the house has been decorated but they are so finicky about their cars. Women might not bother about whether the car is clean or not but she will be too bothered about her nails. Are they properly polished and shaped and have that nail art work on it! These days people spend loads of money to getting their nails decorated and they have all these glitters and designs and the artificial nails, this is creativity but this is too limited to the body alone. So we can say it is not the optimum or real creativity. But everyone has it, in one proportion, in one degree, everyone has that.
