Nature’s Fury in Uttarakhand

Uttarakhand, nestling in the Himalayas, has aptly been called the Land of Gods, being one of the most important pilgrimage destinations. In the summer of June 2013, unexpected cloudbursts occurred, leading to flash floods devastating the area, causing wide-spread destruction on an unprecedented scale. Huge chunks of land simply gave way, washed away by torrential rains. Rivers in full spate and melting Himalayan glaciers gushed down, sweeping away everything in their path. The result was that thousands lost their lives, many thousands were grievously injured and over a lakh of pilgrims were stranded in the midst of landslide hit regions without food, water or medical aid. Thousands lost their kith and kin as the fury of nature continued unabated. Moved by the plight of those rendered homeless, distressed and bereaved, a team from Rishi Chaitanya Ashram immediately left for Uttarakhand to provide support, succor and solace.
Locating Stranded Zones Inaccessible to Relief Operations
Ashram team spent hours climbing the rugged and at times extremely dangerous and treacherous terrain.
Ashram team on its way to stranded villages in Uttarakhand
Wishing to investigate first-hand the dire need of the hour and assess the situation as it really was, the Ashram team spent hours climbing the rugged and at times extremely dangerous and treacherous terrain, slowly inching their way up. Halting along the way for consultations with the local sarpanch and patwari, slowly the shocking truth that came to light was that there were still some areas stranded without any aid at all; landslides and floods had rendered them totally inaccessible to the relief operations/teams. As a result, they had literally no food, clothing, shelter or medicine and were indeed in extreme distress.
A long, arduous trek, which was literally more vertical than horizontal, finally enabled access to some of the remotest villages and the villagers literally swarmed round the team sharing their heart-rending stories of desperation and deprivation. The magnitude of the calamity was such that nothing remained of homes but rubble and debris; everything had been razed to the ground. It was indeed a survival crisis, no less.
Adopting Devastated Villages
Under the dynamic guidance of Anandmurti Gurumaa 4 villages which were the most devastated were adopted.

Touched by the plight of the suffering, grievously injured, impoverished, needy and those rendered homeless, the team was fully aware and awake that it was indeed time for immediate action. Accordingly, under the dynamic guidance of Anandmurti Gurumaa, 4 villages which were the most devastated were adopted. These were – Village Devgram and Barginda in Urgam Valley and Villages Sonali and Tefna in Karna Prayag. It was not a matter of just providing aid in cash or kind – it was much, much more. With the overwhelming love and support of people from all around the world, Rishi Chaitanya Trust pledged to reconstruct 35 houses for suffering brethren and in the process, rebuild lives, construct hopes and bring smiles back amidst the tears. Construction work went on in full swing and in a span of few days 35 houses were complete and ready to be occupied.
Pledge Fulfilled.
Homes & Hopes Delivered.
Ashram Team with Rehabilitated Families in Uttarakhand
On the 21st of December 2013
Rishi Chaitanya Ashram handed over 35 houses, tokens of love, to the respective owners so that
they can once again usher in yet another New Year with hope in their heart.
Your support has got them homes before the onset of the severe, bitingly cold Himalayan winter, and helped restore confidence in their lives. Big thanks to all of you for your whole-hearted contribution and loving support.
