Who am I?

who-am-i

You have to search on your own who you are! Because only the one who goes out to hunt will find. And the one who is afraid of searching, will not gain anything. So do not be afraid of search – and do not be inadequate in your efforts.

Look for that formless being that is within you; look for it! Search for that amorphous God who can take so many forms. Now if you begin looking, where do you start? There are only two places from where you begin: one is to go inside: that is your mind; start searching from the mind. The other is outside: that is your guru. You can begin searching from the satguru, and by making the satguru’s sayings your basis to think, and use the implements of meditation to begin digging for the treasure inside. Meditation is the tool. Both of these can be got from the satguru. Let me make it clear that ‘get from the satguru’ does not mean that the satguru will give it as a commodity to someone and not give it to another. You can take commodities from my shop but only when you pay for them.

Surrender, love search, this is the price you will have to pay. Surrendering the ego completely, and lovingly. One kind of surrender is troublesome. The person is very scared. He did not want to surrender, but he has to do it, as many people get forced by their guru’s personality – they did not intend to surrender, but the guru makes them do so forcibly by his strength and power. I have seen that if a guru uses his power to miraculously make a person his follower this way, the person at some point step back, if his heart does not agree to it fully. The beauty is when you feel for your guru and you go place your heart at his feet. This works better since you have taken the decision to surrender. It is the bravest thing on earth to surrender oneself to the master.

This game is not all that easy either. Let me put it this way: whether the grace comes from the guru’s side or you take the decision on your own, the mind gets trapped at the guru’s feet, and if it gets stuck with the guru, then the journey on this path automatically becomes somewhat pleasant and easier. No doubt, walking on this path is very difficult, but love and surrender make it slightly easier. You will not even know when, in loving your satguru, your mind will become detached from your parents, relatives, friends and family. Then a time will come when the heart cannot be rid of his/her thought. Look how far apart these two situations are: one in which you just could not concentrate, and the other in which you cannot but concentrate.

Baba Bulleh Shah wrote “I am neither a Muslim that I should go sit in a Mosque, nor I am a Hindu to go sit in a temple, I am not a virtuous man nor am I a sinner. Then who am I?”

This is something that cannot be told or said, because even if it is said you might hear it, but of what use is it to you? So, you yourself need to look for, hunt for your real nature, your reality, and the only way to search for it is – recognize your essence. Know your essence, in your own essence lives Jyotswaroop Paramatma – the light which is the manifestation of God.
