Celebrating 10 years of Shakti – Empowering Girls

Shakti Musical Evening in Ludhiana

Shakti in its mission to empower girl child presented an exquisite program – The Grand Finale of Inter School Singing Competition at Nehru Siddhanth Kendra, Ludhiana on the 17th January 2009. Year 2009 marks the 10th successful year of Project Shakti since its inception in 1999. To determine that this project spearheaded by Anandmurti Gurumaa, progresses with great zeal and determination, twelve talented students from different schools across Ludhiana competed for the finale round of singing competition. These students were chosen through a rigorous round of selection. The compositions are created by students themselves. The theme of their compositions was based on “Shakti” which represents ‘Woman’ – an embodiment of affection, benevolence and compassion. Their compositions were not just salutations but efforts to awaken people about her unique position in their lives, in society and in this world. Despite the changing times, there have been major denials to her contribution.

All the students were certified for their participation in the competition. Winner of the competition and two runner-ups received special prize from Anandmurti Gurumaa. The competition was judged by two very prestigious judges- Indian classical vocalist Gauri Pathare and renowned music director Kanchman Babbar. The evening unfolded a musical extravaganza to create awareness about the cause of Shakti-Empowering girls. Speaking on the project Shakti, Gurumaa raised the concern over the malpractices of female foeticide, infanticide and also encouraged all to partake in educating girls by quoting “when a girl is educated the complete generation is educated”. So all of us together should bring the change in our thinking and take steps in the direction to empower girls and help them realise their potential.
